If going to the dentist to have your teeth cleaned makes you extremely uncomfortable, you may want to consider sedation dentistry. Your oral hygiene is important and regular visits to your dentist don’t need to fill you with dread. Even if you struggle with a sensitive gag reflex, sensitive teeth, or have a fear of needles, the team at Dobson Ranch Dental Care do our very best to minimize your discomfort by offering four different sedation dentistry techniques.
1. ORAL SEDATION
Oral sedation is one of the options we offer at Dobson Ranch, and should be taken one hour prior to your appointment. You can expect to remain conscious while all of your worries and fears dissipate. You’ll stay comfortable during any procedure, but mentally detached from what is being done. The effects of oral sedation last for about six hours, so you’ll want to make sure that you have transportation and care both to and from your appointment.
2. NITROUS OXIDE
Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is more common in dental offices. This sedative is used during the procedure; patients remain completely conscious as they inhale the gas through their nose. The gas is designed to help your muscles relax and put your mind at ease. The dentist controls the level of sedation you receive, but the effects of this kind of sedation dentistry will wear off quickly. You should be fine to leave your appointment shortly after it’s finished.
3. IV SEDATION
IV sedation is similar to oral sedation, but the medication is given through your vein during your procedure. Rather than taking a pill beforehand, a dentist who uses IV sedation will hook you up before getting started. You may still remain conscious, but you won’t remember much of the procedure. Unlike local anesthetics, you will not fall asleep and therefore your heart rate won’t need to be monitored. However, the effects can last for some time afterwards, making it essential that you have care and transportation following your procedure.
4. DEEP SEDATION
Some dental procedures, such as wisdom tooth extraction, dental implants, or jaw surgery, require deep sedation. During the procedure, you will be unconscious, and it’s likely that your dental expert will use local anesthesia. Your vitals and heart rate will be monitored the entire time you’re under sedation, and you won’t begin to wake up until the effect wears off. Patients tend to be groggy for several hours afterward, so it’s highly recommended to have a family member or friend care for you.
