5 FAQS ABOUT PORCELAIN VENEERS

Patients with permanently discolored teeth, gaps, or other dental flaws frequently ask about their options for cosmetic dentistry. At Dobson Ranch Dental Care, we offer a variety of options including bridges and implants. Yet, perhaps one of the most common fixes is a set of porcelain veneers. Below are answers to some of the most commonly asked questions that we get from patients about this procedure.

1. WHAT ARE VENEERS?

Porcelain veneers are strong shells that cover the front of your teeth and are used to mask a variety of dental issues, giving you the perfect smile you’ve always wanted. The shells are typically made from porcelain, making them durable, stain-resistant, and natural-looking.

2. HOW MANY VENEERS DO I NEED?

In order to determine how many veneers you’ll need, a professional consultation is required. Your dentist will likely recommend that you have an even number of them bonded to your teeth to achieve the best aesthetic appeal. Patients usually have sets of two, four, eight, ten, or even twelve done at a time. This depends on the look they are hoping to achieve, and how much damage they desire to mask.

3. HOW DO I CARE FOR MY VENEERS?

Caring for your veneers is much like caring for your natural teeth. To ensure they’re long-lasting and that you get the most out of them, brush your teeth twice a day, floss, and avoid alcohol-based mouthwashes, as this can breakdown the bonding adhesive. Your dentist will likely recommend wearing a bite guard at night and give you a list of foods to avoid, such as ice chips, almonds, or other hard foods that could crack a veneer.

4. WHO IS NOT A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR VENEERS?

Veneers are often used for patients who have cracks, chips, or severely stained teeth, or for individuals who are looking for that smile they’ve always wanted. However, that doesn’t mean this procedure is for everyone. If you have severe tooth decay, covering up your teeth is not the best solution. It’s always best to speak with your dentist and understand all of your options before selecting the right one for you.

5. DOES THE PROCEDURE HURT?

During the procedure, your dentist will use a numbing agent to limit your discomfort. Pain during the procedure is uncommon if the right agent is used, and there should be little to no tooth discomfort afterward. Some patients experience soreness in their gums or along the jaw, depending on the length of the procedure and how many veneers were installed.
