CARING FOR CHILDREN’S TEETH, FINDING THE RIGHT PEDIATRIC DENTIST

Finding the right dentist for your child can make a world of difference in the overall health of your children’s teeth. Caring for the teeth of a child is somewhat different than that of an adult, but there are some similarities.

Taking the time to learn the basics of caring for your children’s teeth is a fantastic way to prepare yourself for the care cycle of a child’s teeth.

WHAT MAKES CARING FOR A CHILD’S TEETH DIFFERENT?

We all know that we should brush at least two times a day, floss, and use some sort of rinse, well, a child may have different requirements.

For starters, the teeth of a child are inherently softer than those of an adult. As such, they are more susceptible to things like cavities and decay when they are not brushed properly.

This means that your child, who likely enjoys sweet snacks and treats, is more likely to get cavities than an adult who does not eat as many sweets and who has teeth that have harder enamel.

MILK TEETH

So why are the teeth of a child softer? These teeth are often referred to as “milk teeth” and are there to hold the place in the gums for new teeth that will eventually emerge.

This brings us to the next difference between the dental health of a child and an adult. You are not likely to experience tooth loss if you are an adult while tooth loss in children is completely normal.

As your child ages new teeth will grow, teeth will fall out, and teeth will then grow in to replace those that were lost.

MOUTH PAIN

As such, your child may experience pain in their mouths that is not cause for alarm. With an adult, pain in the mouth is a good excuse to go to the dentist, while pain in the mouth of a child may be nothing more than the pain of a new tooth growing in or an old tooth getting ready to fall out.

Children also have a far less attention span, may want to swallow the tooth paste, may have trouble flossing, or may not be able to use mouthwash.  This means that while dental care at home is important, it is just as important to schedule regular dental appointments for your children.

Regular dental appointments with a pediatric dentist will allow your kid’s teeth to be completely and fully cleaned, allow dentist to spot issues before they become very serious, and allow you to get your child used to being at the dentist.

FINDING A PEDIATRIC DENTIST

The right pediatric dentist is going to be one that works with the child to make them feel comfortable, content, and not afraid to be in the dental chair.

Kids can be a bit nervous when it comes to going to the dentist but a great dentist is going to be able to talk to your child, explain what is going on, and be able to help your child be comfortable in the dentist chair.

A typical dental visit for a child consists of x-rays in some instances to check the growth of new teeth, looking for cavities and making sure that plaque, tarter, and other issues are resolved.

The dentist is not something to fear and having a great dentist for your children is essential.
